The Stables Block project involved the total refurbishment of a 19th Century listed building and its extension to provide a new residential and teaching facility for Autistic teenagers. The building comprises 36 bedroom / bed-sit units each with en-suite facilities, recreational areas, tutor rooms, music & drama suite, art classrooms, therapy rooms, hydrotherapy bathrooms, kitchen / dining facilities and staff facilities / rest rooms. The design of the services installations and the buildings internal finishes had to be extremely robust and secure to prevent the kids from damaging either themselves or the installations. The mechanical services installations comprise a gas fired boiler plant serving a mixture of ceiling mounted radiant panels and low surface temperature radiators. Local ventilation systems are provided for en-suite bathrooms with supply & extract systems provided for teaching and communal areas.
The project included for the replacement of the existing school’s water main to satisfy pressure and capacity requirements for fire hydrants, as well as the sprinkler system which was installed, due to the nature of the accommodation and the school’s remote location. The electrical services design includes a CCTV system within the teaching areas for behavioural monitoring, a staff attack alarm system and a diesel generator for back-up power supply.
