The former Parkhead School is a B listed historic property which has been transformed into a community enterprise centre containing public and office space for Parkhead Housing Association. The building, which was empty for over 15 years, suffered from water ingress, dry rot and structural failure and had a partially collapsed roof. The aim of the project was to restore its position as a local landmark visible across Glasgow’s East End. Glasgow Preservation Trust appointed us to carry out the full M+E design for the facility, overcoming the challenge of designing M+E services suitable for a modern office that could be incorporated within a Historic Scotland B Listed Property status building.
The key specialist skills that our engineers provided which added value to the project included extensive experience of refurbishing works within historic properties. As a result, the building services were designed to be as sympathetic as possible to the historic interior, reusing existing ornate ventilators and specifying simple to use, robust systems to minimise future maintenance. From the outset, we were active participants in the collaborative working process between the client and design team to overcome a technically and logistically challenging site. With all services provided in-house the client received a coordinated and seamless Engineering Service.
