Aycliffe Secure Unit is one of the most modern and technically advanced secure unit for Young People in the UK. The new facility includes 32 secure bedrooms / en-suites, 6 high dependency (DDA Compliant) bedrooms / en-suites, general and vocational education classrooms, physical education / leisure facilities, central laundry and kitchen, administration offices and staff facilities. The Physical Education / Leisure block include large games hall, swimming pool , fully equipped fitness suite and changing facilities. Externally there is a floodlit artificial 5-a-side football pitch. Security systems include cctv, door access, staff alarms (incorporating 2 way speech), bedroom call and perimeter detection. Each of the security systems is integrated through a central control hub which is fitted with two Graphical User Interfaces and allows the Operators to control / monitor each of the systems from a single screen. A Biomass boilerplant provides the primary heating to the building backed up by gas fired boilers. Davie + McCulloch were responsible for the design of the mechanical, electrical and security systems throughout the facility.
