CHP / Waste Heat Boiler, Glasgow Royal Infirmary

Client: NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
Location: Glasgow
Value: £4M
Status: Complete

The Glasgow Royal Infirmary site is served from a central steam boiler plant dating back to the early 1980’s. The plant incorporates 3No. steam boilers operating at a pressure of 9 bar and with a combined boiler rating of 29MW.

As the site has very high base electrical and heating loads, the plan was to install a new CHP (combined heat and power) set, alongside a waste heat boiler, to make use of the heat from the CHP exhaust. After detailed analysis of electricity and gas usage data as well additional metering of heating loads on site, it was proposed to install a 2MW gas engine CHP unit along with a waste heat steam boiler.

Due to space limitations within the Boilerhouse there was no available space for a separate waste heat boiler so a 5MW combination waste heat boiler was installed to replace the existing small summer boiler.
