Glasgow Cathedral Refurbishment of Mechanical & Electrical Services

Client: Historic Scotland
Location: Glasgow
Value: £1,600,000
Status: Complete

The Cathedral Site was first established in the early 1100’s when David I established the medieval diocese of Glasgow and started building work on the first Cathedral Building. In around 1200 it was decided to extend the Cathedral and build the Nave to the west of the spire, followed by the Blackadder Aisle which abuts the south side of the Cathedral.   Building works were completed around the early 1300’s, although major repair works were required on various parts of the Cathedral after it was badly damaged by lightning around 1400.

We were commissioned to undertake a detailed condition survey of the Mechanical + Electrical Services and make recommendations for upgrading and replacing the services installation. Based on these proposals, we were subsequently commissioned to design and project manage the complete replacement of the lighting, power and heating installations throughout the Cathedral.

The project involved close liaison and co-operation with Historic Scotland’s architect and stone masons, the Church of Scotland and Glasgow District Council.
