Early Learning Units – South Lanarkshire

Client: South Lanarkshire Council
Location: South Lanarkshire
Value: £12M
Status: On Site

In spring 2019, South Lanarkshire Council appointed us to undertake the M+E services design work for five new-build Nurseries. The Nurseries were being designed by their in-house architectural team with all design work being undertaken in Revit to BIM Level 2.

The Nurseries are designed to cater for children aged 2-5 years, incorporating internal play areas, staff areas, a kitchen and ancillary spaces. Each of the buildings has been thermally modelled using IES Virtual Environment software to establish CO2 emissions, with various renewable technologies then considered to comply with the required and Building Standards.

At each nursery, the client’s preference was to incorporate photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof, with the output arranged to directly supply the buildings main switchboard. The PV installation was configured to allow electricity to be exported to the grid when the output exceeded the electrical load within the building, delivering sustainability benefits for the local areas arising from reduced demand for more harmful energy sources. Works on site commenced in mid 2020 with completion spring 2010 due to the impact of COVID-19 restrictions.
